Our Story

In 1975, a group of concerned individuals began collecting gently used clothing and redistributing to those in need in our area. Christ Church provided basement space, and Neighbor to Neighbor was formed. Linens, towels, and household items were included in the distribution, and soon Neighbor to Neighbor began supplying food on an emergency basis. In 1984, responding to the increasing cost of living, the Greenwich Department of Human Services asked Neighbor to Neighbor to initiate a weekly food program for Greenwich families in need of assistance. Volunteers packed bags with a variety of food items to supply families with three meals, for three days, for each member of the family.

In September 2005, Neighbor to Neighbor opened its “client choice” Food Pantry, one of only a few operating in the state of Connecticut and a model for neighboring towns’ food pantries. Clients now had the opportunity to choose their own nutritious food with the aid of a shopping list based on the number of people in their families.

Today, Neighbor to Neighbor offers three food programs out of the Food Pantry and provides personal care products, household cleaning products, feminine hygiene products, and brand new winter blankets in our Clothing & Essentials Room
